- Cost per usable pound spans 3.90x, and it runs backwards. The $1,899.99 Bells of Steel delivers a pound of pull for $9.05; the $2,999.00 Force USA G4 charges $35.28 for the same pound.
- $1,300.99 less money buys 1.94x the load. The $1,799.00 Snode gives you 175 lb on a handle. The $3,099.99 RitFit M3 gives you 90 lb.
What the ratio is actually doing
A 2:1 pulley is not a defect and it is not a trick. It is a gear. Running the cable through an extra sheave halves the force at the handle and doubles the distance the handle travels for a given stack movement — so you get a longer, faster, lighter pull. That is genuinely better for chest flyes, face pulls, wood chops and any long-arc movement where you want speed and range rather than load.
The brands that publish it say exactly this. Force USA writes the conversion into its own spec sheet — "2:1 ⇒ with 100 lb loaded, resistance is 50 lb" — and calls it "precision control." Bells of Steel is blunter still: "A single cable features a 2:1 pull ratio (10lbs feels like 5lbs)," and recommends those cables for "lighter isolations like curls, tricep pushdowns, and chest flies."
The problem is not the gear. The problem is that the buyer is choosing between range and load without being told, and the spec that decides it is printed by some brands and omitted by others. If your cable work is flyes and pushdowns, a fixed 2:1 costs you nothing. If it is lat pulldowns and seated rows — the two exercises most people actually buy a cable stack for — a fixed 2:1 on a 170 lb stack means you are capped at 85 lb forever, on a machine that will outlive your mortgage.
That is why the Bells of Steel V1 sits where it does. It is the only machine here that gives you both: 2:1 on the two side cables for the light work, 1:1 down the centre for pulldowns and rows.
Methodology
We ranked these eight on one number — maximum pounds delivered to a single handle — then on cost per usable pound, then on frame quality and how much of the spec sheet the manufacturer was willing to publish.
- Where the numbers come from. Every price, stack weight, ratio, dimension and stock status was read on 2026-08-13 from the brand's own storefront: the Shopify catalog and per-variant endpoints for exact price, SKU and availability, and the rendered product page for specs. Every price was then cross-checked against the US Google Shopping listings in the same-day search results. All eight matched.
- Ratios were verified on the product page, not the catalog feed. This mattered. Snode's catalog description for the ALL10 Pro is two sentences and contains no ratio at all; its product page states "Instantly switch pulley ratio between 1:1 and 2:1." Trusting the feed would have put our top pick in the "does not publish" column.
- The arithmetic. Max load at one handle = advertised stack per side ÷ the ratio denominator. A 210 lb stack at 1:1 is 210 lb. A 170 lb stack at 2:1 is 85 lb. Cost per usable pound is the current price divided by that figure. Every input is the manufacturer's own published number.
- What we did not do. Nobody independently lab-tests home-gym pulley ratios, and we did not put a force gauge on these machines. Every figure here is either quoted from the manufacturer or is arithmetic on manufacturer figures, and the formula is above so you can check it.
- Why some brands appear twice. Force USA and Bells of Steel each take two slots because they are the two brands that publish ratios most completely — Force USA on every model, Bells of Steel down to per-cable-position. That is a selection effect and we are naming it.
- What was deliberately excluded. The Force USA G20 Pro, Major Fitness B52 and Major Fitness B17 are all strong machines and all already covered in our Smith machine guide. Repeating them here would have made two pages that say the same thing.
What We Checked
No one at GearScout has trained on these eight machines, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we did do is the work the search results were not doing, and here is exactly what it turned up.
- We converted every stack. Eight machines, eight advertised stack figures, eight published or missing ratios. The spread between the best and worst usable load — 210 lb against 85 lb — is 2.47x, and none of the four independent editorial pages ranking for this query performs the conversion.
- We read both of Snode's product pages, and they disagree. The stacked ALL10 Pro says the ratio switches between 1:1 and 2:1. The base ALL10 Pro says it "features a 1:1 pulley ratio, which means the weight at the handle is equal to the weight you've selected on the stack." Both confirm 1:1 is available, which is what the ranking rests on. Whether 2:1 is additionally selectable is Snode's inconsistency, not ours, and we are leaving it visible rather than picking a side.
- We scanned Marcy's page for a ratio and found none. A raw scan of the MWM-990 product page returns zero ratio tokens and a single instance of the word "ratio". At $749.99 this is the cheapest machine here and the one whose buyer can least afford a surprise, and its effective handle load is genuinely unknowable before delivery.
- We caught a bad price field. Force USA's catalog feed lists the G4 at $2,999.00 with a "regular price" of $1,999.00 — a was-price lower than the now-price, which cannot be right. The live shopping results list the G4 at $2,999 direct from Force USA, so that is the price we use, and we claim no discount on it.
- We checked every link and every image. All eight product pages returned HTTP 200 under a normal browser request and all eight images returned HTTP 200 with an image content type. Three were opened and inspected for burned-in promotional badges or mislabelled SKUs — all clean. The Bells of Steel studio render turned out to corroborate its own spec: the stack plates are legible in the image and they count up to 210 lb.
- We substituted one image on purpose. The first image in Force USA's feed for the G1 is a dimensions diagram, not a photograph. We used the front-left product shot instead.

Two integrated 175 lb stacks at a 1:1 ratio, wrapped around a power rack, a Smith bar, a functional trainer and a leg-press extension. Snode's own page states the principle plainly: the weight at the handle equals the weight you selected on the stack. That single sentence is worth more than the extra $1,300 the RitFit M3 costs, because it means you can pull 175 lb on a lat pulldown on day one and still have headroom in year three.
The compromise is the steel. This is a 2" × 2" 14-gauge frame with triangular reinforcements, against the 3" × 3" 11-gauge sections on the RitFit and Force USA machines above it. It is a real difference and you will feel it if you load a Smith bar heavy. It is also the reason this machine costs what it does.
- Best for: the most usable cable load per dollar, in a footprint of 57" × 68.7" × 80.7".
- Avoid if: frame gauge is what helps you sleep, or you want a single unambiguous spec sheet — Snode's two ALL10 Pro listings do not agree with each other on ratio switching.

This is the only machine here that hands you both gears. The two side cables run 2:1 for curls, pushdowns and flyes; the centre cables run 1:1 for lat pulldowns and low rows. Bells of Steel spells it out on the listing, which is more than most of this category manages. The 2.3" × 2.3" uprights with 5/8" holes double as a squat stand, and the 210 lb selectorized stack is visible and countable in the brand's own product render.
The catch is the listing title: this is the V1 on clearance. The catalog carries spare parts for an All-in-One Trainer 2.0 but no 2.0 machine for sale, so what you are buying is a superseded model at a superseded price, while stock lasts.
- Best for: getting 210 lb of real pull for under $1,900, if you buy before it runs out.
- Avoid if: you want a machine you can still order upgrades and parts for in three years.

It is the only machine here where the cables and the barbell side are both at commercial capacity, which is the whole argument for spending this much.
Configuration matters to both price and function. The quoted $4,490.99 is the Hydra frame at 84" height and 30" depth; the Manticore frame and the taller and deeper options run up to $4,929.99. Note that the 30" depth packs the Smith and Kraken units tightly enough that only a vertical bar path is possible — pick the 43" depth if you want an angled path.
- Best for: lifters who would out-pull every other machine on this page within a year.
- Avoid if: the budget is the constraint. At $21.39 per usable pound it is more than twice the cost of the Bells of Steel V1 for the same 210 lb.

Dual 170 lb stacks upgradeable to 220 lb, an integrated Smith on quad-bearing rollers, 1" upright spacing with more than 50 numbered positions, chin-up and landmine stations, cables rated to 2,000 lb, and a lifetime frame warranty with ten years on moving parts. At 87" tall, 78" wide, 60.5" deep and 745 lb, it is the most machine here by some distance, and Force USA is the most transparent manufacturer in the category.
Which is exactly how you find out that the functional trainer is locked at 2:1. Force USA prints the conversion itself — "2:1 ⇒ with 100 lb loaded, resistance is 50 lb" — so the 340 lb of iron in this machine will never put more than 85 lb on a single handle. For flyes, pushdowns and face pulls that is fine and the doubled cable travel is a genuine benefit. For heavy rows and pulldowns it is a ceiling you cannot buy past, on a machine you will own for twenty years.
- Best for: the strongest rack and Smith combination here, for someone whose cable work is light and long-range.
- Avoid if: you already pull more than 85 lb on a seated row or lat pulldown. The upgrade to 220 lb stacks still only gets you to 110 lb per handle.

Usable load: 90 lb per handle. $34.44 per usable pound.
RitFit publishes the most granular spec table in this category — "Pulley Ratio", "High Pulley Ratio" and "Low Pulley Ratio" appear as three separate rows, all reading 2:1, alongside a 2,500 lb frame capacity, 16 aluminium pulleys, a 30mm full-length Olympic Smith bar at 352 lb dynamic capacity, and a stated 21.5 sq ft footprint. The frame is uniform 3" × 3" 3mm 11-gauge Q235 front to back, which is unusual at this price; many racks step down to 2" × 3" on the rear posts.
The honesty is admirable and the arithmetic is unforgiving: 180 lb per side through a fixed 2:1 is 90 lb at the handle, for $3,099.99. The Snode above it costs $1,300.99 less and delivers 175 lb.
- Best for: buyers who want a genuinely heavy frame with every number published, and whose cable work is accessory work.
- Avoid if: the cable stack is where you train hardest — both pulleys are locked.
6. Best for a room you live in: Speediance Gym Monster (Basic) — $2,399.00
Usable load: 110 lb per arm, 220 lb total. $21.81 per usable pound.
Resistance here comes from two 800W permanent-magnet motors in 8 lb increments, not from a stack and a pulley, so the ratio question simply does not arise: the number you dial is the number you get. Unfolded it is 49.21" × 28.34" × 72.83"; folded it is under 15 inches deep and weighs 187 lb, which is the only machine on this page you could reasonably keep in a living room.
What you give up is the barbell. There is no rack, no Smith bar and no way to squat or bench a loaded bar, and there is an app and a set of electronics sitting between you and your set. Speediance's product page does not disclose whether that app requires a subscription, so budget for the possibility that it does.
- Best for: apartments, spare bedrooms, and anyone who wants their gym to disappear between sessions.
- Avoid if: you want to lift a real barbell, or you would rather not have firmware in your training.

A power rack, a plate-loaded functional trainer at 2:1, chin-up, landmine and suspension anchors, plate and bar storage, and a stainless frame with a lifetime warranty — for $1,299.00 and no Smith bar. If you already own plates and a barbell, this is the cheapest honest way into the category, from the brand that documents its ratio best.
The 2:1 still applies to your plates: 100 lb hung on the carriage is 50 lb in your hand. And if you do not own plates, budget for them on top before comparing this to the stack machines above.
- Best for: lifters with a bar and plates already in the garage who want cables and a rack added cheaply.
- Avoid if: you are starting from nothing, or you want to select weight with a pin instead of loading it by hand between sets.
8. Lowest price of entry: Marcy MWM-990 — $749.99
Usable load: not knowable from published data.
A 150 lb pin-loaded stack driving a lat bar, upper and lower pulleys, a chest fly station, a leg developer and a preacher curl pad, in 68" × 42" × 78" and 280.5 lb, with a 2-year limited warranty. It is by a wide margin the cheapest way onto a selectorized cable machine, and for pressing, flyes, pulldowns and leg extensions it does the job.
Two things the listing makes you dig for. First, Marcy's own page states this is not a Smith-machine alternative — there is no barbell, no Smith bar and no squat rack function of any kind, which is easy to miss when shopping results list it beside $4,000 racks. Second, no pulley ratio is published anywhere on the page, so what 150 lb on this stack feels like in your hands is something you find out after it is delivered. That is the clearest possible illustration of why this page exists.
- Best for: the lowest possible entry price to pin-loaded cable training.
- Avoid if: you want to squat or bench, or you want to know what you are buying before it arrives.
How to choose
Start with the pulldown. Whatever you can currently row or pull down for eight reps is the number your cable stack has to beat, with room to grow. If that is 120 lb, every fixed-2:1 machine on this page is already too small for you, no matter how big its stack is. This single check eliminates half the category faster than any other question.
Then decide whether you need a barbell at all. Three of these eight cannot take a loaded bar in any meaningful way — the Speediance and the Marcy have no rack, and the Force USA G1 has a rack but no Smith. If squatting and benching a real bar is the point, you are choosing between the Snode, the two Bells of Steel machines, the Force USA G4 and the RitFit M3.
Then measure the ceiling, not the floor. These machines run 78" to 91" tall before you stand on anything. A standard 8-foot basement ceiling with a finished surface leaves very little clearance above a 84" rack, and pull-ups need more than the rack height. Depth is the sneakier constraint: the Force USA G4 is 60.5" deep and the Kolossos in its 43" configuration needs walking room on both sides.
Then budget for what does not come in the box. Almost none of these ship with a bench, most ship without a barbell, and the plate-loaded machines ship without plates. Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading the stack figure as the handle figure. This is the whole page. A "350LB weight stack" machine and a "340 lb dual stack" machine can differ by a factor of two in what they actually pull. Find the ratio before you find the price.
- Assuming a bigger stack solves it. Upgrading the Force USA G4 from 170 lb to 220 lb stacks moves the handle ceiling from 85 lb to 110 lb. If you need 150 lb, no stack upgrade on a fixed-2:1 machine will get you there.
- Treating 2:1 as a flaw. It is a design choice that trades load for range and speed, and it is the better choice for flyes, face pulls and rotational work. It is only a problem when it is fixed and your training is heavy pulling.
- Buying on exercise count. "Over 30 exercises" and "100+ movements" are marketing arithmetic — every cable height times every attachment. They tell you nothing about whether the machine can load any of those movements hard enough to matter.
- Forgetting the machine has to get into the room. These ship in crates weighing 280 lb to over 1,200 lb. Measure the doorway, the stairwell turn and the ceiling before you measure the floor.
- Not checking what is excluded. The Marcy page says outright that it is not a Smith-machine alternative. That sentence is more useful than its entire feature list, and it is the kind of thing that only appears if you read the manufacturer's page rather than a retailer's category listing.
